Is a Carrot a Fruit or Vegetable?
Botanically, this is...
Culinarily, this is...
Legally, this is...
A Fruit! (in the European Union)

Carrots are the main roots of carrot plants that people eat. Although sometimes they are put in delicious cakes, they are not fruits. Something has to botanically be a fruit for it to be one culinarily. Also, carrot cake is basically the only time their consumption resembles fruit’s. You don’t dip fruit in ranch dip hopefully.

This logic has not prevailed everywhere however. In the European Union, jams are legally required to only contain fruit. To avoid disqualifying Portugal’s famous carrot jam, doce de cenoura, the EU declared carrots to be fruits for the purpose of jam-making.
